ABSTRACT



The research
work is on assessment of level of safety practices in indigenous oil
exploration and production companies in Nigeria. The issue of safety practice
is pertinent in a volatile environment like oil exploration and production that
is surrounded with myriad of hazards. The study in its efforts outlines
measures  for effective health, safety
& environment management in oil industry to ameliorate the safety
challenges. The study however collected its data from primary and secondary
sources. Primary data was collected through interviews and administration of
questionnaires on a purposive sample of 61 respondents who are employees of
Conoil Nigeria Limited, Marina, Lagos. Secondary data was collected from
journals, magazines, textbooks, internet, etc. The analysis and presentation of
data collected was done through percentage, chart and non-parametric test of
Chi-square statistic. The findings of the study showed that there is high level
of safety practices in indigenous oil exploration and production companies in
Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study therefore recommends among others
that management should invest in health & safety training to ensure that
employees keep abreast with new development in health & safety knowledge
and practices.
